The
Intesa Sanpaolo Group is the leading banking group in Italy, where it
serves about 10.5 million customers, and one of the top banking groups
in Europe. It is the result of the merger, effective as of January 1st
2007, of Sanpaolo IMI into Banca Intesa.
Gruppo Intesa, in its configuration before the merger was the result of
a series of integrations completed successfully: it was formed in 1998
from the integration of Cariplo and Ambroveneto; in 1999 a Tender Offer
was made on 70% of Banca Commerciale Italiana which was subsequently
incorporated in 2001. The Sanpaolo IMI Group was the result of the
merger between Istituto Bancario San Paolo di Torino and Istituto
Mobiliare Italiano which took place in 1998, and the subsequent
integrations of Banco di Napoli in 2000 and Gruppo Cardine in 2002.
The
Intesa Sanpaolo Group is the undisputed leader in Italy in financial
activities addressed to both individuals and enterprises with the
following market shares: pension funds (32%), asset management (31%),
foreign transactions (27% market share in foreign trade payments),
bancassurance (24%), factoring (23%) and banking intermediation (20% in
customer loans and deposits).
The
Group also enjoys strategic coverage in Central-Eastern European markets
where it is currently positioned among the top players in several
countries. In fact, through its local subsidiaries, the Group ranks
second in Albania, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia, fifth in
Bosnia and Herzegovina and seventh in Slovenia; while it is
strengthening the foundations for growth in new areas such as the
Mediterranean Basin with the recent acquisition of control of Bank of
Alexandria, the fourth largest bank in Egypt.
As
at 31st March 2007, the Intesa Sanpaolo Group had total assets of
598,644 million euro, loans to customers of 331,870 million and direct
customer deposits of 373,269 million.
The
Group‘s activities are organised in business units.

The Territorial Bank Division - including the Italian subsidiary
Banks - hinges on a model focused on the support and enhancement of
regional brands, upgrading of local commercial positions and
strengthening of relations with individuals, small businesses, SMEs and
non-profit organisations. Its main activities also include private
banking and industrial credit.

The Corporate & Investment Banking Division supports the balanced
and sustainable development of corporates and financial institutions
with a medium-long term view, both nationally and internationally,
serving as a “global partner” with an in-depth knowledge of corporate
strategies and a complete range of services. Its main activities include
M&As and structured finance services, merchant banking, capital markets
(Banca Caboto and Banca IMI), global custody along with a presence in 35
countries through a specialist network made up of branches,
representative offices and subsidiaries focused on corporate banking.

The International Subsidiary Banks Division includes retail and
commercial subsidiaries abroad which offer their customers ever more
competitive, service-led and innovating banking.

the Public Finance sector, the Group’s subsidiaries Banca Intesa
Infrastrutture e Sviluppo and Banca OPI are active in the financing of
infrastructures and services for public utility, with specialist product
teams and a dedicated network.

The Eurizon Financial Group is the company in which insurance,
professional asset management and asset gathering activities of the
Group are concentrated.
